OUR MISSION:
Healing TREE (Trauma Resources, Education & Empowerment) is dedicated to transforming how society responds to abuse and interpersonal trauma.
THE ISSUE AT A GLANCE:
Healing TREE focuses on shifting our society from coping and “putting a band aid” on traumatic experiences (from emotional abuse to rape to war) to healing from them. Leading studies (such as the ACE Study) show us that trauma is nothing less than a public health crisis and that it is the root cause behind so many of the toughest problems our society is faced with, like mental illness, physical illness, addiction, crime, assault, domestic violence, homelessness and suicide. Effective treatments are available, there is just a lack of integration between the trauma, mental health and medical fields and of general knowledge surrounding the issue. We exist to change that so that healing from trauma becomes the new normal.
HOW WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION:
Healing TREE connects those who have suffered trauma with resources necessary for healing rather than coping, provides education to professionals across fields and the public at large that promotes awareness, effective intervention and cutting edge treatment and offers empowerment through producing arts projects that encourage a healing movement.

Kentuckiana Social Service Agency Initiative:
In 2018, one of our biggest initiatives is bringing training in a leading trauma treatment modality called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which is evidence-based and recommended by the World Health Organization, American Psychiatric Association, Department of Veterans Affairs, etc., to local social service agencies.
Many agencies who treat the most traumatized people in our community are unable to afford training for their staff in this leading treatment modality and are therefore often left only able to help their clients cope as opposed to heal from trauma. With our help, healing will be available to those who need it most.
"It’s hard to know where to start to paint the picture of my life before I found Healing TREE, but what I remember is the tension along my shoulder blades and the sinking hopelessness in my gut. I remember big dreams I couldn’t focus on. I remember feeling depressed, anxious and completely alone but unable to talk about it.
Without Healing TREE, I would never have found the information, resources, and care network that have been absolutely essential in my healing.
These days, I feel more calm and energized than ever before. My shoulders are softer and my body feels like my own. I’m able to build meaningful relationships and focus on my goals. Because of Healing TREE, my life is my own again." - Survivor, 2016

More than 1 in 3 women and more than 1 in 4 men in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
60% of American adults report experiencing abuse or other difficult family circumstances during childhood.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study shows us that trauma often leads to serious mental, physical and behavioral problems, making abuse nothing less than a public health crisis.
Yet, the lack of understanding around trauma's impact on the brain among the public and professionals (outside of the trauma field) alike, makes resources for healing hard to find and keeps people unwell.
Your support helps us solve this problem by establishing and maintaining the programs that are at the core of our mission:
- Resources including our Approved Care Network
- Education including our Social Service Agency EMDR Training Initiative
- Empowerment including Arts Projects that encourage a healing movement
